If you wanna finally solo with confidence, without getting lost, stuck, or falling back on the same old licks…
Then the Dead Easy Improv course will show you how.
You see, I created this challenge because of something I’ve seen over and over again with students who love the Dead:
Most of them had no idea what to play when it came time to solo.
Maybe they knew chords, riffs, or even some scales… but when it came time to improvise, they froze up.
Either they weren’t sure what to play, or their solos ended up sounding like random noodling instead of music.
Improvising should feel natural and musical.
And here’s the truth:
Great solos don’t come from just learning more scales.
They come from mastering a few simple tools and making them second nature.
That’s exactly what we’ll do together in this 30-day challenge.
With short daily lessons and custom backing tracks, you’ll learn step by step how to build solos that sound confident, musical, and like you.
By the end, you won’t just know more theory.
You’ll be able to actually step into a jam and play with confidence.
If you’re ready to finally move past noodling and start soloing for real, then you can get instant access below.
When you practice soloing does it look like this?
-
You pick up your guitar and run through the same scale shapes you’ve memorized…
-
Then jump over to a YouTube lesson, get inspired for a minute, but quickly feel lost…
-
Then noodle around on your fretboard without any real direction
All while time goes by but your solos don’t actually sound any better?
Now look, there’s value in exploring freely and just noodling around: it’s part of how we all discover ideas.
But if your goal is to sound confident when you solo, that “practice routine” isn’t going to get you there.
Instead, it’s better to focus on small, achievable goals that build real improvising skills in just 5-10 minutes a day.
And that’s why I created Dead Easy Improv: 30 Days to Soloing Confidence.
The goal is to take you from hesitant noodling to confident soloing in one month.
-
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never improvised before…
-
Doesn’t matter if you only know a couple of scales…
-
And it doesn’t matter what kind of guitar you play.
This course walks you step-by-step through short lessons and custom backing tracks so you can actually hear yourself improve every single day.
I designed this challenge for players who are new to improvising, but really, it’s for anyone who wants to finally feel comfortable creating solos on the spot.
What people have been saying about my other course Grateful Dead » Guitar Fundamentals...
“I used to struggle to make solos sound like anything, now I can play through ‘Sugaree’ with the vocal melody, and it sounds great.”
Doug T

“You’re going to come to a point where you choose a faster path or a slower path. The Grateful Dead Guitar Fundamentals is the faster path, period.”
Michael R

Before I share more, let me introduce myself:

My name is Jeff Williams.
I’m a musician and guitar teacher with a BA in Music from Westfield State University, with a concentration in Jazz Studies on guitar.
Over the years, I’ve played hundreds of shows with dozens of bands, in a wide variety of genres.
Nowadays, my real passion is teaching guitar and creating YouTube videos.
Over the last 20 years, I’ve taught hundreds of students both online and in-person.
Through that experience, I’ve learned how to provide the guidance, structure, and support guitarists need to grow faster and more confidently.
I’m proud to have helped so many players overcome their limiting beliefs, become more expressive, and enjoy playing guitar more than ever.
And I’m grateful to consistently receive positive feedback, testimonials, and comments from students all over the world.
But it wasn’t always this way…
I used to struggle with improvising, building solos, and jamming with others.
Sometimes I felt like I’d never sound musical.
I’d play scales for hours, trying to force solos to come together…
I’d push myself until my hands were sore and my brain was fried…
And still, I felt stuck in the same place.
I’m embarrassed to say I even had teachers tell me my solos sounded like random noodling. At the time, it crushed me.
But music was my passion and I was determined to get better
So I studied my favorite improvisers. Players like Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, David Gilmour, Trey Anastasio, Duane Allman, and others.
And it wasn’t until I started breaking solos down into simple building blocks: shapes, phrasing, rhythm, and articulation, that everything clicked.
That shift taught me how to improvise with confidence, connect with other musicians in a jam, and finally sound the way I’d always wanted to.
After seeing so many guitarists struggle with the same obstacles, I knew I needed to create a course that tackled this head-on…
And so, the Dead Easy Improv Challenge was born!
I decided to design a 30-day course that focuses on the most fundamental parts of improvising: the skills that transform aimless noodling into real music.
This challenge gives you short daily lessons, custom backing tracks, and a clear path to build confidence as a soloist.
Whether you want to jam with others, write your own music, or just play for yourself, developing your improvising skills will make every moment on the guitar more fun and rewarding.

What songs are included and why?
I decided to use 10 classic Grateful Dead songs as the foundation for this challenge:
-
Scarlet Begonias
-
Morning Dew
-
Sugaree
-
Brokedown Palace
-
They Love Each Other
-
China Cat Sunflower
-
Mississippi Half-Step
-
Dark Star
-
Friend of the Devil
-
He’s Gone
I chose these because they’re some of the most well-known and loved Dead tunes…
They’re also some of the best vehicles for improvising. These songs have grooves, progressions, and jam sections that let you apply scales, phrasing, and creativity in a way that feels musical from the start.
And since they vary in style and difficulty, you’ll get to practice soloing in different contexts: from open jams to verse and chorus progressions.
Each song is paired with custom backing tracks so you can put the day’s lesson into action right away.
Here's a little sneak peek into the course...
On Day 1, you’ll dive straight into a Scarlet Begonias jam track. The goal isn’t to play perfectly, it’s just to get into a flow state and have something to compare to when you revisit the same track on Day 30.
Later on, you’ll explore Morning Dew, where you’ll start by working over just the verse, then expand into the chorus, and eventually combine them for the full progression. Each step adds new shapes and phrasing ideas that build your confidence.
Other days focus on tracks like Sugaree in 6/8 to practice phrasing triplets, or Dark Star to experiment with space and creativity.
This isn’t about learning every note Jerry ever played. It’s about giving you the big-picture concepts, the tools, and the space to practice, so you can sound musical and expressive right away.
Each song reappears throughout the challenge, sometimes in new variations, so you’re always building on what you’ve already learned.
Get Instant AccessAs an added bonus you'll get...
✅ Bonus #1: Four Deep Dive Videos
In addition to the daily lessons, you’ll get extra “Deep Dive” videos spread throughout the challenge.
These let us slow down and focus on bigger-picture topics like:
-
Fretboard foundations (how scales and shapes connect)
-
Jerry-style phrasing (making solos sound melodic, not noodly)
-
Rhythm and groove concepts (how to lock in with the band)
-
Putting it all together (how the skills stack up in a jam)
✅ Bonus #2: High-Quality Backing Tracks + Master PDF Guide
Each lesson comes with a custom backing track recorded by professional musicians.
You’ll also get jam-along videos showing which chords are being played and what scale shapes to use.
Plus, a printable PDF reference guide with all the key scales, shapes, and phrasing tips in one place.
✅ Bonus #3: Dead Easy Ear Training Mini-Course
Train your ears to hear scales, modes, and chord movement the way Jerry did. This bonus mini-course makes it easier to recognize what’s happening in the music and react in real time while you solo.

Once you go through the 30-day challenge, you’ll be able to…
✅ Solo with confidence, without falling back on the same old licks
✅ Understand how to use shapes, phrasing, rhythm, and articulation to build real solos
✅ Jam along with classic Dead-style tracks and actually sound musical
✅ Improvise freely in different grooves, progressions, and feels
✅ Build the foundation you’ll use for any style of improvising, from Dead to blues to beyond
✅ Feel more confident every time you pick up your guitar
But they haven’t only helped me…
My guitar courses have helped dozens of my students overcome obstacles:
Luke
“Breaking out each device and covering it separately with examples really helped me understand the structure behind Jerry's style and helped me connect it musically. It’s an Incredibly well put together course”.
Karl V
“I really learned a lot about Jerry Garcia's styles and how they speak with different types of songs. I gained a whole new appreciation of Jerry as a guitar player and artist.
Some of the more esoteric devices featured on the song Dark Star were completely new and surprising to me. A totally different groove.”
Jeremy L
“The course is easily digestible yet challenging. It’s much more organized than anything I’ve learned on YouTube and I really enjoyed the backing tracks."
Brendan J
“Your motto, less is more, has enabled me to not play my guitar. When I commune with my instrument, it's therapy at this point.
You in this single video, opened that door I've been trying to for years: how to get the emotions and music in my mind to flow through my hands and out of my body without having to give it much thought.”
